Back to the U.S.A.

June 25th, 2007

Today I’m heading down over the Canadian border into the US, to New York State and Vermont, for a few days camping with a friend. All going well we will get down as far as Concord and pay our respects at Walden Pond, the location of Henry David Thoreau’s famous book.

I’m hoping that while camping beside a lake in the Adirondacks or in the farming country of Vermont I’ll hear the low, baleful call of a loon (a kind of bird) as did Thoreau over a hundred and fifty hears ago. Check this space in a week from now and you’ll find out about my trip.

It was a year to the date, that you gave me Thoreau’s ‘Walden’ (followed by champagne and an organic fine dining experience!). How I loved that book and how it inspired me to contemplate and reflect upon gaining fulfilment in life from the simplest of elements, from stripping back. And now you will be heading to that very place – to the pond! How wonderful. I wish I could stand beside you at the water’s edge, capturing the spirit of Thoreau. Instead I can only hope to gain a sense of that from your photos at least! Toss in a pebble from me- to Thoreau, to a simple and fulfilling life, to the power of nature!
